Feed ingredient guide

Typical nutrient values of common forages, grains, protein feeds and by-products, with practical notes for ration planning.

DM = dry matter (% as fed). CP, NDF and starch in % of DM. NEL = net energy for lactation, Mcal/kg DM. Typical ranges compiled from NRC (2001) and feed databases; your own feed analysis always comes first.

Forages

FeedDM %CPNDFStarchNELPractical note
Corn silage30–387–938–4528–351.45–1.60Main energy forage; quality depends on harvest stage and kernel processing.
Alfalfa hay88–9017–2238–482–31.20–1.35High in protein, calcium and potassium; limit in close-up dry cow rations.
Alfalfa haylage35–5018–2238–451–31.25–1.40Keeps more leaves than hay; protein is more soluble.
Grass hay86–908–1450–651–31.10–1.30Useful for dry cows and heifers; quality varies widely with cutting date.
Wheat straw88–923–475–80–0.85–0.95Low energy, useful to add physical fibre and control energy in dry cow diets.

Energy feeds

FeedDM %CPNDFStarchNELPractical note
Corn grain86–888–99–1170–721.95–2.05Starch is fermented more slowly than barley; processing (grinding, flaking) increases digestibility.
Barley87–8911–1318–2255–601.80–1.90Fast-fermenting starch; introduce gradually and balance with effective fibre.
Wheat87–8913–1512–1463–681.90–2.00Very fast-fermenting starch; limit inclusion to avoid acidosis.
Dried beet pulp88–919–1040–451–21.65–1.75Digestible fibre and pectin: energy without much starch, good for rumen health.

Protein feeds

FeedDM %CPNDFStarchNELPractical note
Soybean meal88–9048–538–151–31.90–2.00Reference protein source with a good amino acid profile.
Sunflower meal89–9130–4035–451–21.40–1.60Widely used in Türkiye; fibre and protein vary with dehulling.
Cottonseed meal89–9140–4525–301–21.60–1.75Contains gossypol; limit amounts, especially for young animals and breeding bulls.
Canola / rapeseed meal89–9138–4225–301–21.60–1.70Good protein source with supportive evidence for milk yield.
Corn DDGS88–9128–3230–403–81.95–2.10Protein and fat; high unsaturated fat can lower milk fat at high inclusion.
Full-fat soybean89–9138–4015–202–52.15–2.30Protein plus about 18–20% fat; limit total unsaturated fat.

By-products

FeedDM %CPNDFStarchNELPractical note
Wheat bran88–9016–1840–4520–251.55–1.65High in phosphorus and magnesium; useful fibre source in concentrates.
Brewer’s grains (wet)22–2825–3045–503–61.55–1.70Good protein and fibre; store carefully, it spoils quickly.
